Freedom Crossing
Fifteen-year-old Laura Eastman has just moved back North after four years living with Southern relatives, and she's brought their convictions with her — including sympathy for the South's right to keep slavery. When she discovers her own father and brother are secretly part of the Underground Railroad, and a friend brings a twelve-year-old runaway named Martin Paige into their home, Laura is forced to confront what she actually believes.
With a slave catcher watching the house, Laura disguises herself in her brother's clothes to help Martin slip past and make the dangerous run toward the Canadian border and freedom. Margaret Goff Clark's novel is a tense, accessible introduction to the Underground Railroad for young readers.
