Synopsis

This novel centers on a lengthy poem written by a recently deceased poet, John Shade. The poem is presented alongside extensive commentary by his former father-in-law, Charles Kinbote, who claims to be the exiled king of Zembla. As Kinbote's annotations grow increasingly bizarre and self-serving, the true nature of the poem and the relationship between the two men becomes disturbingly unclear.
