Synopsis

Five Tuesdays in Winter is Lily King's first collection of short fiction, following her acclaimed novels Writers & Lovers and Euphoria. It gathers ten stories — five appearing for the first time — that move across different lives, ages, and forms of longing, each building toward a quiet, earned moment of recognition or change.

The title story follows Mitchell, a punctilious 42-year-old bookseller in Maine, as an unlikely romance unsettles his carefully ordered life. Elsewhere, the collection turns darker: a reunion between former college roommates curdles into a shockingly brutal encounter after one of them comes out as gay; a marriage quietly comes apart; a smart teenager fends off an assault. One story follows a German woman whose husband dies while biking to work, leaving her with debt and a withdrawn preteen daughter to raise alone. In the surreal final story, an aspiring writer and mother of three — frantic for time to work and shaped by belittling, alcoholic parents — literally battles her own demons to get the page written.

Across the collection, King is interested in the space between longing and its consequences: what people risk, or fail to risk, for connection. It's a book of restrained, precise stories rather than plot-driven fiction, well suited to readers who admired the interiority of her novels.
