This book would’ve gotten a 5 stars from me had it been a bit faster in pace in certain areas ?
SPOILER INCOMING:
This book follows the story of two step sisters arlo and mickey; they both never met, only know some stuff about each other. They have one thing in common which is that they are both deeply affected by their father, who at the beginning of the book passes away and leaves a huge sum of money to one of them.
This book basically dives into grief, addiction (because one of the characters deals with an alcohol addiction and beware it’s very detailed and deep so proceed with caution), family relationships and parental trauma, huge deep parental trauma and how it shaped both these girls.
The book has a great potential but like i said some parts were too slow so it sort of ruined the experience.
Mickey’s character is a very complex, deep character, you’ll either grow to love her or not sympathize with her at all. As for Arlo, she’s someone you’d judge but still feel empathy for. She has that stuck up rich girl persona but as the book goes on you’ll learn to see the layers hidden behind that.
And like I said, their father traumatized both of them on a very deep level.
One thing I loved in the book was how seriously it portrayed addiction, Morgan dick was able to show you the ugly unaesthetic parts of someone battling addiction, the denial, the never ending cycle of I will change and then relapsing.
Overall it’s a 4.5 stars🫶🏻
