Synopsis

When Margaret Welty, the best sharpshooter in the small town of Wickdon, spots the last living hala, she knows the Halfmoon Hunt is coming — and whoever kills the legendary creature will win fame, riches, and an ancient magical secret. Only teams of two may enter, so she needs an alchemist, and gets a reluctant one in Weston Winters, twice-fired from every apprenticeship he's landed. Paired against their will and drawn to each other despite it, Margaret and Wes must survive a bigoted rival hunter and a darker magic than either of them bargained for.
