I think Famine is my least favorite book of the series so far. It was bad.
One of the main problems I have with it it’s the setting. It’s so basic and generic, there’s not enough research on Brazil and their culture and it shows. Like I said in my last review, I truly appreciate when authors get out of their comfort zones and set their stories outside of the USA, but this feels like a bunch of Brazilian city names thrown into the text. No traditions, customs, or mention of native plants, wildlife, or food, nothing. I think there was one tree and that was it.
The world building is non-existent. The plot is the same as in book one. 24 years of the Horseman coming to earth, each one forgiving humanity, and yet there’s no change seen in the humans or anything else.
I don’t even know what to say about Ana being a sex worker when it was only used to make jokes and sexual innuendos every 3 lines even after it was stated that she didn’t choose to be one and sexual abuse was involved many times.
I like morally grey characters, but Famine was just a murderer, he enjoyed all the killing. Also, where was the famine? All I read was killer plants.
The only highlight was Death. My anticipation and expectations for his book are on the roof even if a little part of me knows I might end up disappointed.
