Frequently asked questions

  • How do these stories differ from traditional folklore?

Unlike the Brothers Grimm who collected and retold existing oral folklore, Andersen crafted original literary fairy tales that distilled ancient forms into a unique style characterized by his own acute sensitivity and descriptive power.

  • Why did the author stop using the phrase for children in his titles?

Andersen initially included the phrase for children in his early booklets but eventually omitted it as his writing evolved to include more experimental and realistic themes intended for a broader, more mature audience.
