Lucy Heartfilia dreams of joining Fairy Tail, the most famous — and most notorious — wizards' guild around. On her way there, she's dazzled by "Salamander," a charismatic mage who turns out to be a fraud named Bora, using a love-charm to lure young women into being sold into slavery for pirates. Lucy is saved by Natsu Dragneel, a reckless fire wizard with a talking blue cat named Happy, who reveals he's been searching for Salamander too — and that he's an actual Fairy Tail member.

After the two team up to take Bora down, Natsu brings Lucy back to the Fairy Tail guildhall and gets her inducted as a member, kicking off Hiro Mashima's long-running magical adventure series. Volume one sets up the found-family charm and slapstick humor that define the franchise.
