Π
Πλάτων
Classical Greek philosopher
Φαίδων
This dialogue recounts the final hours of Socrates' life, as told by his student Phaedo to Echecrates, a Pythagorean philosopher. Set in an Athenian prison on the day of Socrates' execution, it follows the discussion Socrates holds with his friends Simmias and Cebes about the nature of the soul and whether it survives death.
Socrates offers several arguments for the soul's immortality, closing with a mythic account of the afterlife, before the dialogue turns to the events of his death itself. It is one of Plato's most widely read dialogues and a central text on Platonic views of the soul.
