Synopsis

Travis has spent centuries doing the same job: sitting with people in the last moments of their lives, someone they meet only once. He lives alone in a gray British city threaded with canals and allotments, restoring old photographs between visits. Then Dalia, a midwife, and her young daughter move in across the hall, and Travis is drawn into their ordinary, noisy life almost against his will.

The novel follows what happens when Death starts wanting to stay. Travis learns to cook, to argue, to wait outside a hospital room for reasons that have nothing to do with his job. The boundary he has always kept, between watching a life and living one, begins to give way.

It is literary fiction narrated in Travis's own voice, closer to a quiet character study than a fantasy premise played for effect. The metaphysical hook opens the book, then steps back for the people in it. The pace is unhurried and the mood is tender rather than eerie, building toward a loss it never turns away from.

This is Ben Reeves's first novel. An early draft, then titled Dance of the Mayflies, won the Bath Novel Award in 2024, before Simon and Schuster's Avid Reader Press published the finished book in July 2026.
