Synopsis

Matt Pine is a student at NYU. After a night out, he comes back to his dorm to learn that his mother, father, younger brother and younger sister have died from an apparent gas leak while on vacation in Mexico. Local police call it an accident. The FBI and the State Department seem unconvinced, and neither will tell Matt why.

The deaths draw national attention partly because the Pine family has been in the news before. Matt's older brother, Danny, is serving a life sentence for killing his teenage girlfriend, Charlotte. A viral true crime documentary argued that Danny was wrongfully convicted, and much of the country now backs him.

Matt has never told anyone what he knows. On the night Charlotte died, he saw something that convinced him his brother is guilty. When he goes home to bury his family, he meets a small town that the documentary painted as the villain, a pack of reporters, and memories he thought he had left behind.

This is a thriller with a mystery at its core, told through Matt's eyes. As the Mexico deaths look more suspicious and more tied to Danny's case, Matt has to dig into the original crime, and doing so puts his own life at risk.
