Espía de Dios (God's Spy) opens in Rome in April 2005, in the tense days after the death of Pope John Paul II, as the Vatican prepares for a conclave to choose his successor. Amid the mourning crowds in St. Peter's Square, the mutilated body of a cardinal is discovered, marked with ritualistic wounds and messages steeped in religious symbolism. When a second cardinal is murdered in the same brutal fashion, it becomes clear that a serial killer is loose inside the Church's inner circle.
Criminal psychiatrist and police inspector Paola Dicanti is assigned to the case and is soon joined by Father Anthony Fowler, an American priest and former army intelligence officer with unsettling knowledge of the killer's methods. Their investigation pulls them into the Vatican's most closely guarded secrets, including a clandestine program for rehabilitating priests accused of sexual abuse, and raises the question of whether someone within the Church hierarchy is protecting the murderer.
Written by Spanish author Juan Gómez-Jurado, God's Spy was first published in Spain in 2005 and became an international bestseller, selling more than a million copies across editions in 42 countries. It is the first novel to feature Inspector Paola Dicanti and Father Anthony Fowler.
