Emergency Skin is a science fiction novelette by N. K. Jemisin, published by Amazon Original Stories in September 2019 as the third entry in the Forward collection. It won the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Novelette, the Ignyte Award for Best Novelette, and an Audie Award for its audiobook, narrated by Jason Isaacs.
A colonist from a world settled centuries ago by Earth's self-declared finest is dispatched back to the planet they abandoned. His mission is to collect a sample of the HeLa cell line, and his briefing is unambiguous: Earth is a graveyard, the people left behind are hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity, and he should get in, get out, and try not to stare. What he finds instead is a planet that recovered — and did so, it emerges, precisely because the people who left were no longer in it.
The story is told in the second person by the artificial intelligence embedded in the protagonist's skull, an unreliable narrator that issues his orders, supplies his history, and grows steadily more strained as the world in front of him refuses to match the one it describes. Jemisin uses that voice to build a compact, pointed argument about extraction and mutualism, about who a society decides is worth saving, and about the stories an elite tells itself to justify leaving. It runs under forty pages and is designed to be read in a single sitting.
