Ein Sommer ohne uns
Ein Sommer ohne uns follows Verena, deep in her final exams and about to start university, who has never kissed or slept with anyone but her boyfriend Tom. Rather than risk cheating on him or ending things, the two agree on an experiment: an open relationship for the three months after graduation, after which they plan to be exclusive again.
The novel is told in three parts — "Fünf Jahre zuvor" (Five Years Before), which traces how Verena and Tom got together at thirteen; "Jetzt" (Now), covering the summer of the agreement; and "Ein Jahr später" (One Year Later). Sabine Both uses spare, poetic language to explore whether an open relationship can really work, and whether love can survive infidelity, as both characters discover feelings they hadn't planned for.
