Synopsis
Ein Lächeln sieht man auch im Dunkeln is told in the first person from three alternating perspectives. Samuel is new at Marie's school, and the two are drawn to each other and pushed apart again in equal measure. Between them stands Theo, Marie's younger brother, who has been living with his fears since a terrible incident more than a year ago and is being bullied at school by a classmate named Andi.
Meeting one another gives all three of them a fresh start, but it also forces them to face what they have come from — because Samuel brings a secret of his own into the new friendship, and his relationship to violence is not the same as Theo's.
Adriana Popescu handles bullying, fear, and the wish to forget with a light hand, and Marie's own life, largely subordinated to protecting her brother, gets as much weight as the romance. Recommended for readers aged fourteen and up.
