The narrator has the life she wanted: a little girl, and an engagement to Nick, whom she has had a crush on since she was a child. Nick's sister Carla was her best friend growing up, until Carla ran away at sixteen and was not heard from again.
When Nick announces that Carla is finally coming home, it feels like the last piece falling into place.
It does not stay that way. Carla is warm enough, but she will not talk about where she has been. Her account of their childhood is subtly wrong in places the narrator would know about. Nicola Sanders builds the book on that mismatch, and on the position the narrator is put in: the only person who can tell that something is off about this woman is also the person with the most to lose by saying so out loud.
