Synopsis

This novel follows the disparate paths of four men forced into exile by the rise of Nazism and the onset of World War II. One, a teacher dismissed for his Jewish ancestry, finds himself conscripted into the German army. The others, all Jewish, include a surgeon who struggles to adapt to British society, an artist, and a man who becomes a butler in New York, each grappling with their new realities and lost identities.
