From childhood he hides his terror behind the mask of a clown, playing the fool so that no one will see how disconnected he truly is.

As he drifts into adulthood, that estrangement curdles into self-destruction: failed love, betrayal, alcohol, morphine, and a series of attempts to end his own life. Framed by a narrator who examines Yozo's photographs and confessions, the novel traces a soul that cannot find a way to belong to the human world.

Published in 1948, shortly before Dazai's own death, No Longer Human is one of the most widely read novels in modern Japanese literature — a raw, unsparing study of shame, depression, and the desperate performance of normalcy.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kjz4awc9td0m5nc117s4v5d5.jpg","LGRS$Z-:%2wN~pkWR*e.8xofozV@",1948,192,[135
"01kjqtqft2yyy8xx87819xbzq6","untitled-mo0n","太宰 治",[140,144,148,149,153,154
58,"Classics","classics
15,"Drama","drama
68,"Manga","manga
67,"Comics","comics",[159
"01kq3wxh37s5nq9extd0rf8f44","manga-de-bungaku-xtvm","Manga de BUNGAKU","1.00
"slow",[111,167,110],"dark",[],"A man who has spent his life hiding behind a mask of clownish performance because he cannot understand or connect with others' emotions, and whose self-loathing drives him toward addiction.
"01kjq7vve1jp8xd330grwrj6z5","kafka-on-the-shore-ijax","Kafka on the Shore","Kafka on the Shore follows two seemingly unrelated journeys that gradually bend toward each other. His flight carries him to a quiet private library in the seaside city of Takamatsu, where he takes shelter among the stacks and the people who tend them.

Elsewhere, Satoru Nakata, an aging man who lost his memory and his ability to read after a strange childhood incident, moves through the same world on a quieter frequency. Nakata cannot manage much of ordinary life, but he can talk to cats, and a simple errand to find a lost pet pulls him onto a road he does not fully understand.

As their paths run in parallel, Murakami threads together talking animals, spirits that slip loose from the living, fish that fall from the sky, and a song that seems to hold memory itself. It is a novel about fate and free will, about grief and desire, and about the strange interior places we travel through to become ourselves. Beneath the polished surface, she finds herself unable to reconcile the future she is expected to want — marriage, motherhood, quiet domesticity — with the writer and free self she longs to become.

When Esther returns home to the Boston suburbs, the disconnection deepens into a full mental collapse. Sylvia Plath traces her descent with unnerving clarity, following Esther through insomnia, paralysis, and hospitalization, and into a course of psychiatric treatment that is by turns frightening and, eventually, steadying. The bell jar of the title becomes Plath's enduring image for depression: a transparent enclosure that seals a person off from the air everyone else breathes.

Published in 1963 shortly before Plath's death, and drawing closely on her own experiences, The Bell Jar is a landmark of twentieth-century literature. To test the theory, he murders a rapacious old pawnbroker. Not that she's told anyone yet. Mitchell, South Dakota, isn't exactly bursting with other trans women. Instead, she keeps to herself, teaching by day and directing community theater by night. That is, until Abigail Hawkes enters her orbit. Abigail is seventeen, Mitchell High’s resident political dissident and Only Trans Girl. It’s a role she plays faultlessly, albeit a little reluctantly. She's also annoyed by the idea of spending her senior year secretly guiding her English teacher through her transition. But Abigail remembers the uncertainty—and loneliness—that comes with it. Having deadline to meet and can't understand why she always had to do all the menial tasks in the department and deal with the messes they'd made, Shibata decided for a little experiment.

"I can't do it. I'm pregnant. The smell of coffee, it triggers my morning sickness. The cigarettes too..." And that's how Shibata became pregnant with Week 5 and counting.

Told in an epistolary format; a diary entry accordingly to her pregnancy week (as the Japanese title for this book echoes the Boshi techō; a maternal and child health handbook that enable mothers to document the chronicle of their pregnancies in Japan), it was so descriptively narrated, quite cunning yet so surreal and provocative. I like the combination of themes as it was not only revolves on the workplace discrimination, gender prejudice and womanhood in the patriarchal society but also tackles the issue in pregnancy (the hurdle to conceive and postpartum depression) and self existence.

Well structured with great 'imaginary' development and it amazes me on how Shibata really went all out in faking her pregnancy-- from planning her diet, getting maternity badge for subway to joining mommies aerobics and finding a good name for the baby. Love that throughout her journey she learns so much about her co-workers, meeting new friends, understanding behaviours and most of all; to stop misjudging.

The blurry line in between truth and lies quite captivating-- the absurdity gets too thrilled and tensed that at a point I wonder if it was true(?) esp when Week 32 ended with 'the baby's been kicking so much more lately' that she decided for a check-up later. Higashinakano's story was such a twist and Hosono too-- both were distressing yet so thoroughly explored.

Love how Shibata overcame the situation at the end with such a great aftermath to end her diary. Riveting and bold, a recommendation if you're searching for a social commentary premise but want it to be a light and joyful read. 4.3 stars to this!

Thank you Pansing Distribution for sending me a proof copy for review!","none","rv-01kr82xz7m60f676fvfqqx2fmf",[],"2026-05-10T04:39:35.000000Z"]
