Synopsis

A French illustrated retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by Sébastien Perez and illustrated by Benjamin Lacombe for Albin Michel Jeunesse's "Les Classiques illustrés" series.

Perez retells the story in fourteen short chapters, narrated throughout in the first person by the Scarecrow — the companion who believes himself to be stupid, yet who keeps holding the group together and finding the way through danger. Dorothy, her dog Toto, the Tin Woodman and the Lion travel to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard for the thing each of them believes they lack.

Lacombe's illustrations combine Art Nouveau and Art Deco ornament with a fifth, metallic green ink that spreads further across the pages the closer the travellers come to the Emerald City. The book first appeared in French in 2018; Edmund Jacoby translated the German edition for Verlagshaus Jacoby & Stuart.
