Der Geschmack von Abschied und Asche continues Jonna Enders's Metanoia duology, begun in Der Duft von Salz und Sonne, following a group of young Yuro — members of an ethnic minority born with magical abilities — on their journey to the Amida Islands.

Having left everything familiar behind in the first book, the group now faces the harder task of training, adapting to a new life, and reckoning with losses along the way. Enders, who also illustrates her own books, builds out the world established in the opening volume while pushing her characters toward the confrontations the series has been building toward.

As a self-published fantasy duology aimed at young adult readers, the series is best read in order starting with Der Duft von Salz und Sonne.
