I felt polarized when reading The Catcher in the Rye. I often found Holden annoying, rude, and judgemental, but I also felt myself agreeing with some of his opinions. Still, he was a bit of a snob and seemed to find only the flaws of others but never paid attention to his own. A typical teenager, of course, and probably the first hipster around.
I can see why American Lit teachers recommend this book to their high-school students. But I don't think that's a good idea. It might only increase their feelings of alienation and misanthropy, especially if they suffer from depression. And it will probably only make them feel like they are justified in their selfish arrogance.
The themes and issues explored were done expertly, but I couldn't swallow the rapey vibes and non-consensual acts happening in the background and sometimes right at the forefront! The off-handed misanthropy, racism, and ableist language didn't help either. This book hasn't aged well.
