Challenging the common perception of European Jews as helpless victims during the Holocaust, this history reveals the untold story of Jewish resistance. Nechama Tec chronicles a remarkable forest community in western Belorussia that grew to over 1,200 Jews by 1944, forming the largest armed rescue operation of Jews by Jews in World War II. This community, comprising men, women, and children, not only survived against overwhelming odds but also provided refuge and support to other Jewish fugitives, establishing essential services like workshops, a hospital, and a school in the forest.
