Synopsis

Eveen is an undead assassin in the city of Tal Abisi, one of the Dead Cat Tails: killers who sold their afterlife to the goddess Aeril, Matron of Assassins, in exchange for having their memories stripped and their bodies remade into weapons. The precepts are simple — a contract must be just, only the named target can be killed, and once accepted a job must be carried out.

When Eveen is handed a contract to kill a girl named Sky, she expects a routine job. Instead, the moment she sees her target, forbidden memories flood back — memories that should be impossible for someone who traded them away. Sky, it turns out, may be a version of Eveen herself, displaced across time. What starts as an assassin's caper turns into a whodunit, as the two women race to uncover who is powerful enough to manipulate a goddess's assassin into a contract she was never meant to fulfill.
