Synopsis

In 1930s and 40s Vancouver, three Chinese immigrant children navigate their identities between two cultures. Jook-Liang dreams of becoming an actress, while her adopted brother Jung-Sum grapples with his sexuality and past trauma through boxing. Their youngest brother, Sekky, learns a harsh lesson about war and love when his nanny falls for a Japanese man. This novel beautifully recounts their memories of Canadian life, the horrors of war in their homeland, and their search for belonging.
