Octavia E. Butler is rapidly becoming one of my favorite writers. This sci-fi series, in particular, has aged well. The story concept is rather unique and fresh. The exploration of what makes us human is almost anthropological in its awareness. The boundaries of sexuality and gender identity, especially for the 80s, are artfully challenged. I imagine that when she wrote this, it must have been even more innovative and outstanding than we find them today, considering the diversity and richness of the characters. I can't wait to read the rest of her books!
