Das Meer und ich

The narrator, a woman in her mid-forties in the grip of a quiet life crisis, plans a short getaway to a small island with her friend Isa — hoping for good conversation and a fresh start. When Isa cancels at the last minute, she goes alone, disappointed and unsure of herself.

During a solitary beach walk she finds a message in a bottle, and shortly afterward meets Lene, the woman who wrote it. What follows is an account of the friendship that forms between them, and of the narrator's slow return to a sense of her own worth.
