Synopsis

The narrator, a woman in her mid-forties in the grip of a quiet life crisis, plans a short getaway to a small island with her friend Isa — hoping for good conversation and a fresh start. When Isa cancels at the last minute, she goes alone, disappointed and unsure of herself.

During a solitary beach walk she finds a message in a bottle, and shortly afterward meets Lene, the woman who wrote it. What follows is an account of the friendship that forms between them, and of the narrator's slow return to a sense of her own worth.

Journalist-turned-author Tessa Randau writes in the same warm, reflective register as her bestselling "Der Wald, vier Fragen, das Leben und ich," using a real encounter to explore self-doubt, midlife reinvention, and the value of unplanned connection.
