Synopsis

Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White continues Amélie Wen Zhao's Song of the Last Kingdom, a YA fantasy drawing on Chinese mythology and folklore. Lan, who lost her mother to the Elantian colonizers hunting the legendary Demon Gods, is determined to destroy the gods for good and end the corruption they bring. Zen, bound to the Black Tortoise demon, instead wants to use their power to drive the colonizers out by force. Their diverging plans lead both toward Shaklahira, a fallen Imperial stronghold that may hold the answers, or the ending, they're each searching for.

The sequel deepens the series' colonization themes and pushes its central romance toward an increasingly costly choice.
