Synopsis

After her mother is murdered and their farmhouse burned, eighteen-year-old Seraphine flees to the city of Fantome, ruled by two feuding guilds who traffic in Shade, a dangerous, magic-fueled powder. Taken in by the Order of Cloaks, Sera sets her sights on the leader of the rival Daggers, the man she believes killed her mother. Standing in her way is Ransom, the Daggers' charismatic heir, tasked with hunting her down. As monster attacks spread through the city and old family secrets surface, Sera and Ransom are drawn into a dangerous game where the line between enemy and ally keeps blurring. Catherine Doyle opens the City of Fantome series with a fast-paced YA fantasy of guild warfare, buried grief, and a slow-building romance between two people who are supposed to want each other dead.
