Synopsis

Spensa enters the Nowhere — the hyperspace dimension that cytonic humans can perceive and navigate — searching for a weapon called the Defiant weapon that could free humanity from the Superiority. Inside the Nowhere she discovers it is inhabited by others who are also trapped, including the ancient Delver entities that the Superiority fears above all things. Cytonic is the most inward-looking Skyward novel, trading aerial combat for exploration of the strange dimension that underlies the series' FTL travel system and delivering answers to the mysteries of Spensa's cytonic powers.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to read Starsight and the novellas before Cytonic?

Reading Starsight first is essential. The novellas (Sunreach, ReDawn, Evershore) add context but Cytonic is followable without them.

  • What is the Nowhere?

The Nowhere is the hyperspace dimension that connects the Skyward universe's FTL travel. Cytonic individuals can perceive and navigate it consciously, though most humans use cytonic drives built from alien technology without this ability.

  • Is Cytonic slower-paced than the previous books?

Yes — the absence of aerial combat and the exploration-focused structure make Cytonic the most measured-paced entry in the series, though it delivers answers to questions running through the series.
