Cold Eternity
Halley Zwick was a political aide until she learned something she was not supposed to know. Now the people she worked for want her silent, and she needs somewhere nobody will look. She takes an illegal caretaker post on the Elysium Fields, a decommissioned space liner she once visited on a school trip, now holding thousands of cryogenically frozen bodies belonging to people wealthy enough to gamble on a resurrection technology that never worked.
The job is simple: walk the corridors, check the pods, keep the systems running. Her only company is the ship's family of holograms, the long-dead founder's children, still greeting visitors who no longer come. Her only colleague is a mechanic who does not like questions.
Then Halley starts hearing something moving behind the bulkheads, and the holograms start telling her to get off the ship.
S.A. Barnes writes claustrophobic science-fiction horror in the vein of her earlier Dead Silence and Ghost Station: a small crew, a dead vessel, and something aboard that has been waiting a very long time.
A political aide hiding from the people she used to work for, taking a caretaker post aboard a derelict cryogenic liner.
The ship's mechanic, the only other living person aboard, and no friend to Halley.
One of the founder's three children, present aboard the ship as a hologram, and the one who helps Halley.
A hologram of the founder's daughter, still performing her role as host to visitors who no longer come.
A hologram of the founder's son, one of the three siblings who greet arrivals aboard the Elysium Fields.
