Synopsis

It's the winter of 1854, and Kirsten Larson's family is crowded into a small cabin on the Minnesota frontier, waiting out the cold with her brother Lars's trap line for company. When Kirsten rescues an orphaned raccoon kit from the woods, she can't bring herself to leave it behind — but the raccoon gets loose in the cabin and starts a fire that destroys the Larsons' home and nearly everything in it. Facing a bleak future, Kirsten and Lars return to the woods and make a discovery that helps the family rebuild. The sixth and final book in the original Kirsten series follows the Larsons through loss, hard work, and the resilience of a pioneer family determined to start again.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to read the earlier Kirsten books first?

It helps. Changes for Kirsten is the sixth and final book in the original Kirsten series, and it follows directly from the family's established life in Minnesota. New readers can follow the story on its own, but the emotional weight lands harder if you've read the earlier books.
