Synopsis

In The Cemetery of Untold Stories, Julia Alvarez follows Alma, a Dominican-American novelist who retires from teaching and writing and decides to return to her family's homeland. She inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic and, rather than build a house, creates a cemetery for the unfinished manuscripts and notebooks she accumulated across her career.

The buried stories, however, don't stay quiet. Filomena, the local woman hired as groundskeeper, becomes the unlikely listener to the voices Alma tried to lay to rest — among them Bienvenida, the dictator Rafael Trujillo's abandoned first wife, written out of the official record, and Manuel Cruz, a doctor who fought in the underground resistance and fled to the United States.

Blending magical realism with the history of the Trujillo dictatorship and the experience of the Dominican diaspora, the novel moves between Alma's present-day reckoning and the lives of the characters she tried to leave unwritten, exploring migration, memory, sisterhood, and what happens to the stories a life leaves unfinished.
