Sergio Ramírez Mercado (born August 5, 1942, in Masatepe, Nicaragua) is a novelist, short-story writer and essayist regarded as Nicaragua's most prominent living writer. A leading figure in the Sandinista revolution against the Somoza dictatorship, he served as Vice President of Nicaragua from 1985 to 1990 before leaving politics to focus on literature.
