Captain's Daughter
During the Pugachev Rebellion in 18th-century Russia, a young officer finds himself caught between duty and affection. He falls for the daughter of his commanding officer, whose fortress is besieged by rebels. Their love story unfolds against a backdrop of political upheaval and personal sacrifice.
The narrative is a fictionalized account of the Pugachev Rebellion, a genuine peasant uprising that occurred in Russia between 1773 and 1774. Pushkin conducted extensive research into the historical rebellion, including traveling to the region to collect witness testimony, before incorporating those findings into his prose.
Several adaptations exist, including a notable 1958 Soviet drama film directed by Vladimir Kaplunovskiy that portrays the events of the novella.
This is the only completed novel written by Alexander Pushkin, who was primarily celebrated as a poet and playwright during his lifetime.
