Synopsis

In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, Nebraska schoolteacher Audrey Stone throws herself into supporting the war effort any way she can — spending nearly every spare moment at the canteen her community set up at the North Platte train station, offering food and kindness to soldiers passing through. Rancher Willard Johnson admires her passionate spirit, but when his brother is killed in action, he feels he must enlist himself to avenge him. Inspired by the author's own grandparents and her hometown's real wartime canteen, this is the first book in the "Cornhusker Dreams" series.
