Cane River

Told across four generations of women from one Louisiana Creole plantation community, Cane River follows a single family line from slavery into the early twentieth century. The novel begins with Elizabeth, an enslaved woman whose fate is tied to her master's land and his wife's cruelty; it moves forward through her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter as each generation fights for autonomy, dignity, and ownership in a world that refuses them all.
