I really don’t know if I like this or not. It’s so strange.
The first thing I notice is that Oli’s inner voice, dialogue and personality is very immature. I guess it matches with the fact that she is a teenager and all they do is complain, and she does it ALL. THE TIME. But for someone who had to fend for herself since fourteen years old, with an awful power inside her and the things she had to do and see to survive, I expected her to be more mature. I knew very little about what this was about when I started it, but I was not expecting the story to revolve around college and mundane routines, so it added even more to how immature I felt the story. I guess I was envisioning a more magical world since everybody has bonds. and the description mentions “the fate of my people”so I thought it was a much more dense story.
At this point the world is a bit underdeveloped, I have a million questions about how it works, the politics and the relations between the gifted and gift-less people, and about the bonds but since this is the first of six books, I’ll wait and see if the other answers them, even though i feel like those answers should be in the first one. But I’ll be patient.
Also it feels very repetitive, I was constantly reading the same phrases over and over again “ Like I have the pest or something” “All I gave up for them”, “They’re are good looking”, “No thank you” “I rather die”, and all the times she says “f•••” “f••••••” “freaking” and “bitch”. After a while it gets annoying.
I have mixed feelings about all the main characters, I understand their feelings but their actions are awful. Oli hurted her Bonds by running away from them without any explanation or at least mentioning that she was trying to keep them safe. I know that the Bonds were hurt and resentful of her actions but why even try to keep her with them if they hated her and treat her like s•••, they assume she’s a whore and she’s being “selling herself” but they have been sleeping around to whoever they please to. Seems misogynistic that she’s the only one expected to stay faithful to them.
But even after all the things that I mentioned above I devour this book. It took me less than a day to read it. I lost sleep because I needed to finish it and even now I don’t want to keep writing this review, I want to start the next one. So my rating is completely based on my mood this time, I recommend you to read other more objective reviews. This is my guilty pleasure now and I feel ashamed for giving it four stars.
The author managed to write solid, interesting and very different characters that keeps my interest in the series, I have no experience with RH and I was hesitant to read this because of it, but since this is slow burn and it’s not only sex driven attraction but an actual bond in place it felt much more natural, so I’m glad this was the first book I ever read with that trope , however at this point I hate Nox, I’m guessing he’ll have a sad story to justify his behavior but I’m not sure I can forget, which is a shame because his gift it’s very interesting, It was unnecessary to the story, his s••••• actions and behavior was enough.
