Sciona Freynan, orphaned young and relentlessly ambitious, has spent two decades preparing to break into that elite -- and when she becomes the first woman ever raised to the rank of highmage, she expects triumph. Instead she is met with sabotage and contempt, and the only person assigned to assist her is Thomil, a janitor from the despised Kwen underclass who survived the catastrophe that destroyed his people. As Sciona pushes into research no one wants examined, she and Thomil begin to trace the city's magical power back to its source -- and to a truth Tiran has buried to protect its prosperity. What they uncover forces a harder question than any spell: whether someone who has thrived inside a monstrous system can ever be innocent of it. A standalone work of dark academia and industrial fantasy, this novel pairs an intricate, almost mathematical magic system with an unsparing look at ambition, prejudice, and complicity. Wang\n★★★★ 4.5\n\nContent note: This book contains depictions of systemic colonial violence, forced displacement, mass death used as an invisible resource, and the dehumanization of an entire people. It is not graphic in a visceral sense, but it is emotionally heavy in a way that accumulates slowly before hitting very hard.\n\nTiran is a bright, humming, industrial fantasy city trains and factories and magical conduit lamps, the kind of invented world that feels lived-in from the first page. It is also a city whose entire civilisation, every light and every luxury, runs on life-force siphoned from the people living beyond its barrier. The people who are dying for it do not know Tiran exists. The people inside Tiran know and have decided not to think about it.\n\nThis is the premise M.L. Wang builds her story on, and she does not let you look away from it for a single page.\n\nSciona Freynan is Tiran's first female highmage. She has spent her whole life fighting to be let into a room, and when she finally gets there, she discovers the room is monstrous. She is brilliant, abrasive, and at the start of the book, thoroughly complicit in a system she does not yet understand. She is also, in the most specific and uncomfortable way, the kind of person who believes that being smart is the same as being good.\n\nThomil is her assistant, a Kwen man who grew up beyond the barrier and now survives inside Tiran by making himself invisible. He cuts his hair to pass. He modulates his voice. He has swallowed decades of himself so the city will tolerate his presence. And still, when Sciona begins to see the truth, it is Thomil who has known it all along not from research or discovery, but because it has always been his life.\n\nThe two of them share the kind of dynamic that fantasy rarely commits to honestly: a power imbalance that the narrative refuses to soften. Sciona can have him fired, imprisoned, killed, with a single lie. This fact sits underneath every scene they share, even the warm ones.\n\nFantasy regularly builds systems of oppression as backdrop. Slavery, colonialism, racism they appear as atmosphere, as world-flavour, while the protagonist navigates a hero's arc across the top of them. Wang does something different. She makes the oppression the actual machinery of the magic system. You cannot use the magic without participating in the harm. There is no clean version of power here, no ethical path that leaves the infrastructure intact.\n\nThe book's most extraordinary conversation takes place over a sink full of soapy bowls. Thomil explains Kwen morality to Sciona a system that judges people by the actual effect of their actions on the world, not by the intentions behind them. The concept of vakul the riverbed with no river, the potential for good that never becomes good is one of the most original pieces of constructed philosophy I have encountered in fantasy fiction. Wang invents an entire moral framework, delivers it through organic argument, and then spends the rest of the novel testing it.\n\nSciona begins the book as a woman who has spent her life thinking her intentions make her virtuous. By the end, she is forced to reckon with what her work has actually done to the world. Whether she becomes a river or stays a ravine is the real question the book is asking.\n\nWang writes with a sense of controlled pressure. Scenes feel like water building behind a dam composed on the surface, enormous underneath. She does not overwrite her emotional beats; she earns them through accumulated detail, so that when the grief or rage or tenderness arrives, it lands clean.\n\nHer dialogue is particularly strong. The arguments between Sciona and Thomil are fully-sided she does not write one character as wrong and the other as right, she writes two people whose entire frames of reference were built by different worlds, talking across a gap that neither of them can fully close. Sciona's blind spots feel true rather than convenient. Thomil's patience is not sainthood it is survival, and the book knows the difference.\n\nThe pacing is dense in the early sections, when Wang is laying the bones of the magic system and the social structure. Readers who need immediate forward momentum may feel the first hundred pages slower than they expect. Once Sciona begins to see the truth, the book shifts into something almost relentless.\n\nThe antagonists of the High Magistry are drawn with clarity but occasionally without texture. Archmage Bringham, Sciona's mentor, is the most developed among them his warmth alongside his complicity is genuinely unsettling. Some of the others are thinner. In a book this carefully argued about how systems perpetuate harm, there is occasionally a felt absence of interiority in the people who most benefit from the system continuing as it is.\n\nCarra, Thomil's niece, is a wonderful presence fiercely real in every scene she occupies. She deserved more of the book than she received.\n\nThe image of Sciona standing at a spellograph, doing brilliant, precise, elegant work, while somewhere beyond the barrier a stranger dies for the energy she is pulling and no one around her finds this worth discussing. Wang makes that feeling inescapable. By the time the moral reckoning arrives, it feels less like plot than like consequence.\n\nThe book is also, underneath everything, about what it costs to unlearn. About the specific pain of being the clever one, the exceptional one, the person who was finally let through the door and then discovering that the door was built on something you cannot stomach. Sciona's arc is not redemption in the neat sense. It is something harder: the decision of what to do with what you now know.\n\nReaders who loved the moral weight you can read also - The Poppy War by R.F.
