Black Butler, Vol. 1

Ciel Phantomhive, a young earl in Victorian England secretly serving the Queen as her "Watchdog," commands Sebastian Michaelis — a demon butler bound to him by a Faustian contract that will end with Sebastian claiming Ciel's soul. Until then, Sebastian's supernatural competence keeps the Phantomhive estate running flawlessly, whatever chaos the household's clumsier servants create.

The volume moves between darkly comic domestic mishaps — a crucial dinner nearly ruined, a broken engagement ring to repair — and genuine danger, climaxing when Ciel is kidnapped by the Italian mafia and Sebastian dispatches an entire gang armed with nothing but cutlery. Yana Toboso's gothic manga blends horror, comedy, and mystery around one of anime's most iconic master-and-servant pairs.
