Synopsis

Lawrence Durrell recounts his experiences on the island of Cyprus, initially as a visitor, then as a householder and teacher, and finally as a Press Advisor during a period of political unrest. With his fluent Greek and deep understanding of the local people, Durrell offers a perceptive and often humorous portrayal of village life, ancient sites, and the island's natural beauty. However, the peaceful existence gradually gives way to political turmoil as Cypriots rise up against British rule, demanding union with Greece.
