Synopsis

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is Patrick Horvath's hand-illustrated graphic-novel debut — a gleefully macabre thriller once pitched as "Dexter meets Richard Scarry."

Samantha Strong is the most reliable shopkeeper in the cozy woodland town of Woodbrook: a warm-smiling brown bear who wants nothing more than her tidy storefront and quiet routine. She is also a serial killer, one who follows a strict rule — never the locals. Her victims come from the big city beyond the forest.

That fragile peace shatters when a Woodbrook resident turns up savaged by someone else's hand. As panic spreads and Sheriff Patterson starts asking questions, Sam realizes a rival predator is hunting in her woods — a threat not just to her routine but to the double life she has built. She'll do whatever it takes to find them first. Horvath pairs storybook-soft, anthropomorphic art with genuinely gruesome violence, and the contrast is exactly the point.
