Because of Winn-Dixie
India Opal Buloni is a ten-year-old girl who moves to a new town in Florida and feels like an outsider. Her life changes when she adopts a scruffy, stray dog named Winn-Dixie. Together, they help Opal connect with the people around her and discover the meaning of friendship and family.
The author wrote the book while living in Minnesota during an exceptionally harsh winter, drawing on her longing for her home state of Florida and her desire to have a dog of her own.
A feature film adaptation directed by Wayne Wang was released in 2005, which is generally considered by readers to be a faithful representation of the original story.
The novel was named a Newbery Honor book in 2001 and also received the Josette Frank Award and the Mark Twain Award.
