Synopsis

A wounded stranger, unable to recall his past, appears in the village of Wad Hamid and is embraced by its people. Named Dau al-Beit, he revitalizes the community with his ideas and trade before mysteriously vanishing. The story then follows his son, Bandarshah, and subsequent generations, as they navigate village life, politics, and mystical encounters, all while grappling with the legacy of their enigmatic ancestor.

Tayeb Salih (1929–2009) was a Sudanese novelist and short-story writer, widely regarded as one of the most significant Arabic-language authors of the twentieth century. Born in a village on the Nile in northern Sudan and educated at the University of Khartoum, he taught briefly before moving to England in the 1950s to join the BBC Arabic Service, where he became head of radio drama. He later served as director general of information in Qatar and worked for UNESCO in Paris and the Arab Gulf State...
