Speaking about the book, the author describes a standalone fantasy rom-com and a deliberate departure from the gothic fantasy of the Shepherd King and Stonewater Kingdom duologies: Orla Fogarty is pushed down a well on her wedding day and finds Mallory Devlin already at the bottom, a trickster Reynard who is the incarnation of Bad Luck and who must collect a hundred years of it to settle a wager with his brother.

The two strike a bargain — he helps her learn who pushed her, she gathers as much bad luck as she can.
