Synopsis

When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send away to an orphanage for a boy to help work their farm at Green Gables, they are stunned to receive Anne Shirley instead: a talkative, red-haired eleven-year-old with an inexhaustible imagination. Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel follows Anne's first years in the close-knit community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, as her enthusiasm and impulsiveness alternately delight and exasperate the people around her.

Beneath its gentle, often comic surface, the novel is a coming-of-age story about belonging: an unwanted child finding a home, a family choosing to love her, and a girl learning to temper her dreaming with responsibility without losing what makes her herself. Montgomery's descriptions of Prince Edward Island's landscape and seasons became as beloved as her heroine.

A cornerstone of children's literature translated into dozens of languages, Anne of Green Gables spawned numerous sequels, films and television adaptations, including the acclaimed Anne with an E. This French edition, Anne de Green Gables, was published by Éditions Points in 2022.
