An Infinite Love Story
In 1968, astronaut Joe Mitchell launches into space while the country watches, certain of another triumph as America aims for the Moon. Then his wife Vivian hears a knock at the door. His spacecraft has lost contact, and he and the other astronauts aboard are feared dead.
Vivian grieves in the public eye while the nation waits and mourns alongside her. In private moments she goes back over the history of her marriage, unable to accept that a love she believed was fated could end this way.
As the investigation into the lost craft grows more intense, officials write the failure off as operator error. Vivian refuses to let that verdict stand against her husband. She sets out to clear his name and learn what really happened in space.
Then messages begin to arrive, ones she believes only Joe could have sent. Her search turns into a question of whether love can outlast distance and time.
This is a romantic drama set during the 1960s Space Race, with a touch of magical realism. It moves between Vivian's present-day mourning and her memories of the marriage, and it blends a love story with a mystery about a husband's reputation.
This is a standalone novel that does not require familiarity with the author's other works to follow the narrative.
The narrative utilizes an intertwined timeline that alternates between the early years of the protagonists' relationship and the aftermath of the central disappearance.
The author drew upon her own personal background as an Air Force spouse to depict the emotional challenges and the often unseen labor associated with that life.
