Synopsis

Kailey Crane is a writer for the Herald, engaged to Ryan and comfortable in the life she has built. Leaving a candlelit dinner at one of Seattle's smartest restaurants, she stops to hand her leftovers to a thin, bearded homeless man on the sidewalk, and finds herself looking into the face of Cade McAllister, the man she loved ten years ago and who disappeared without explanation.

Cade is a faded version of the person Kailey knew: still recognisable, but his mind has suffered badly in the intervening years. Over the following weeks she begins to help him piece his life back together, at first without telling Ryan, and the further she goes the harder it becomes to say where her loyalty lies.

The novel alternates between the present day and the Seattle music scene of the 1990s, where Kailey and Cade met and fell in love. It is a story about first love, memory and second chances, and about a woman forced to choose between the future she has planned and a past that has come back to find her.
