Isabelle Drake's son Mason was lifted out of his crib one night while she and her husband slept in the room next door. That was a year ago. The police found little to work with and the case went cold, and in the twelve months since, Isabelle has stopped sleeping almost entirely, getting by on catnaps and stretches of time she cannot account for.
She spends her days speaking about Mason to anyone who will listen. When Waylon Spencer, a true crime podcaster, proposes a series about the disappearance, she agrees, and the two of them begin working the case again. The reporting takes Isabelle back through her own marriage, her account of the night itself, and the death of her sister in their childhood.
Stacy Willingham alternates between the search and Isabelle's earlier life, and the further the podcast gets, the less certain Isabelle's own testimony becomes. The question the book keeps returning to is not only who took Mason, but how far its narrator can be trusted about a night she was asleep for.
