bell hooks (born Gloria Jean Watkins, 1952 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky; died 2021 in Berea, Kentucky) was an American author, feminist theorist, cultural critic and poet who wrote more than thirty books on race, gender, class, love and teaching. Her pen name, deliberately styled in lower case, honors her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. Her best-known works include Ain't I a Woman, Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center, Teaching to Transgress and All About Love, and she also wrote children's books and poetry. She taught at Yale, Oberlin and City College of New York, and from 2004 was Distinguished Professor in Residence at Berea College, where the bell hooks Institute was founded in 2014.
