Synopsis

Alanna: A Graphic Novel Adaptation (2025) retells the opening volume of Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness quartet in full color, adapted by Vita Ayala and illustrated by Sam Beck. It follows the same story as the 1983 novel: Alanna of Trebond trades places with her twin brother Thom, disguising herself as a boy named "Alan" to train as a palace page while he studies sorcery at the convent. Through hard training, a bullying rival, and new friends among nobles and thieves alike, Alanna works to earn her place and keep her secret.

This is a new illustrated telling of the original novel's story, not a different book in the series — the same plot Pierce wrote in 1983, redrawn for a new generation of readers.
